While taking a break in the shade under a huge fernleaf beech I noticed something.
Two different leaves on one branch, the first part of the clip shows an almost standard european beech shaped leaf, while the last second or two show the narrow, dissected & serrated leaves of the fernleaf beech.
This is not uncommon as cultivated trees often revert back to there true core species.
Genetic instability, stress response, and a lack of preventative pruning can all lead to accelerated reversion.
Pruning can help maintain the cultivated form but reversion will always be a possible issue. ... See MoreSee Less

We planted over 2200 native broadleaf trees on this forestry creation site. Just 12 weeks ago, It was completely clear of bracken.
Today the bracken is almost 4 feet tall. It's easy to see how it can engulf an area and smother other plants. It takes away light and nutrients that our trees need to establish. It's really amazing how fast it grows & can grow up to 8 feet in a season. It's aggressive growth habit can destroy newly planted trees.
Cutting it back, around our protected trees gives them much needed light and space to establish.
We'll be back tomorrow to finish off the site before moving onto other maintenance jobs.

Two photos taken two months apart ( photo 1 6th may , photo 2 , 7th July).
When we planted the site it was clear of bracken and full of bluebells.
The bracken is now over 1m high, but could grow as tall as 2.5m by the end of summer.
We'll be hand cutting the bracken at the start of next week.

We've been removing quite a few die-back infected ash trees over the last twelve months.
Mainly on roadsides or where there was the potential for them to cause serious harm.
But today was spent turning the ash logs into winter warmth.
